Roseland Bacon Wrapped Pork Filets

roseland-pork-chops-topWe picked up these pork filets at Aldi recently for $5.99. They were a bit more expensive than most items we purchase off brand, especially considering how little meat there was (4 pieces, oz each) and the ominous warnings on the front of the box (solution, beef). However, we decided to try them anyway, because bacon wrapped pork filets just sounds so good.

I decided to grill them, since all meat longs to be grilled in some way, that’s nature. This was my first time grilling pork, or rather my first time cooking pork in any way. I decided to season them with some Caribbean jerk mixed spices, one of my favorite ways to cook chicken with a little kick.

Things started off all right, they looked like little hockey pucks of pork. The bacon was a bit fatty and flared up some, then just fell off. Of the four filets, three of them lost their bacon within the first few minutes of cooking. It just flopped off and would not go back on, though I didn’t try very hard since things were pretty hot and everything.

Everything came out all right in the end (as long as you don’t like bacon) and they cooked nicely. They came out plump and juicy, something I didn’t entirely expect from my first venture into the complex world of pork grilling. The flavor was excellent, the jerk spices cut through the more subtle pork flavor.

My one gripe is that they were a bit salty. I think this is because the “solution” mentioned on the front of the box was probably salt water, and I think it stayed in the meat pretty well.

So, on the whole it was tasty, but failed to provide the promise of bacon wrapped pork (because it fell off) and was a bit on the salty side. I enjoyed them, but I think we will go looking for something else the next time we want pork.

Try adding a wooden skewer (Soaked in water first!!) through the fillets to keep the bacon on. They probably don’t come with one because it would make it a hassle to package and probably catch on fire if the wood dried out.

Good idea! I have also tried sticking a few toothpicks in, and that worked well too.
